Pink Ribbons galore

Posted on October 2, 2012

Did you know that every 30 seconds, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer? It accounts for over 30% of female cancers and sadly, the statistics dictate that at some point you, your mum, your sisters or your girlfriends will be victim to this horrid disease. Scary but true.

Your support then in raising awareness and valuable funds can make a big difference. A BIG difference. The screening and treatments now available combined with the ongoing research into this area mean that survival rates are better than ever.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and dozens of organisations put on some pretty cool fundraising events.  One of these is Ignite fitness & wellness who hold their annual SWIM RUN at the Atlantis to kick off their Pink is Punk campaign.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The event is THIS FRIDAY – 5th OCTOBER at Atlantis, The Palm and if you haven’t registered, don’t worry – you can do so at Park Place this week or on the day at 0630 at the Atlantis
  • The entry fee is AED 150 (for registrations before) and AED 170 (for registrations on the day), which includes a PINK IS PUNK t-shirt, registration, your race chip, access to Aquaventure post event, a goodie bag, prizes, a discounted brekkie at Saffron … and a huge serving of satisfaction from supporting a great cause!
  • Individuals or teams can enter and the format is a 400m swim followed by a 1.6km run
  • Registration and warm up is from 0630 to 0715, the event begins at 0730 and the prize giving starts at 0900 at Dolphin Bay, Atlantis
  • There are LOADS of great prizes up for grabs and you can buy extra PINK IS PUNK t-shirts for only AED 40. Great cause and they look hot so buy a few!
  • For more info, call 04 448 7142 or email

Of course, those participating in the event, indeed any event, require good hydration and for that we have just what you need!

Available at Adventure HQ for AED 90 (all of which goes to charity), the Pink Ribbon ‘United in Hope’ Flip Straw Bottle by Nathan is a high-tech hydration system in a gorgeous package!  It’s a super bright, stainless steel, travel sport bottle featuring four breast cancer ribbons and the words ‘United in Hope’.  BPA-free, the bottle won’t rust, won’t leak, keeps its contents cool, is easy to fill, simple to grip and can easily be attached to backpacks and belts.

Adventure HQ is at Times Square – totally convenient wherever you work, rest and play so pop in this week and grab a hold of one whilst stocks last – you’ll be doing your bit for this fantastic cause never mind, taking great strides to topping up your hydration levels before, during and after Ignite’s Swim Run this Friday!

In the words of the ever-inspirational Lance Armstrong:

If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them.  When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope?  We have two options, medically and emotionally:  give up, or fight like hell.
