Get creative with cards

300px-French_suits.svgI was listening to The Jillian Michaels Show earlier and specifically, a segment on keeping fit when on the move. She shared a great fitness game, using a deck of cards, which I have to share.

We all find ourselves far from home, for work or for play, and falling out of a routine. Combine this with the oft additional wining and dining and we can find ourselves returning home not feeling on top of our worlds.

For me, I’d never consider leaving town without my running kit and discovering new places on foot is one of my favourite things to do.  But what if you don’t run?  What if your hotel has a dingy ill-equipped gym with no natural light and no hot totty to admire?

Here’s your solution!

Take a deck of cards and do the number of repetitions that appear on that card:

  • Numbers 2 to 10 – do that many repetitions
  • Face cards – do 10 repetitions
  • Ace – take a one minute break

Each suit will determine your activity, for example:

  • Diamonds – Push-ups
  • Hearts – Lunges
  • Spades – Squats
  • Clubs – Burpees

Of course, you can mix up the exercises every time you play the game.

With the above, for example, pick up a:

  • Three of hearts – you will do 3 lunges
  • Jack of spades – 10 squats
  • Ace of diamonds – take a one minute break
  • Nine of clubs – 9 burpees

So there you go.  Simple yet fiendishly clever, is it not?! 

The next time you find yourself on the move and not having easy access to a gym … or even if you’re at home and want to inject some variety and fun into a quick workout without even leaving the front door, you can get your heart pumping and your abs sculpting using nothing more than a deck of cards. Everyone has a pack at home and using them for the odd morning workout instead of a late night poker game, washed down with water instead of wine, will surely bring us no end of benefit!
