Do you find yourself hitting a health food store with the greatest of intentions only to leave feeling overwhelmed by the mass cocktail of supplements on offer? If only there was one pill that combined the recommended amount of every vitamin, mineral and nutrient you need.

During your 20’s and 30’s, it’s easy enough to be a little cavalier but beyond that, your nutritional needs change and so should your approach to dietary supplements. With this in mind, we went straight to an expert to discover just what men in their 40’s need to stay strong and healthy, in body and in mind!

Recommended supplements for all 40-something’s:

Multi-vitamin – unless you live on a pollution-free, tropical island and exist on a purely organic diet, a good quality multi-vitamin is necessary to ensure you’re getting at least the minimum necessary vitamins and minerals.

Probiotic – Good gut health is imperative for good overall health so get a decent probiotic and give your stomach a helping hand.

Fish Oil – The balance of Omega 3 & 6 for our cave dwelling ancestors was around 1:1. These days you’d be lucky if it was 1:25 so make this a priority and your heart, joints and brain will thank you.

Digestive Enzyme – You’re not what you eat but what you absorb so give your digestive system a helping hand and take a good quality digestive enzyme.

Fibre – Sure, we all know we should eat more veggies and salad but do we?  If not, you need help and fibre is the thing to do it.  It’ll help with fat loss as well thanks to its role in digestion and satiety.

CoQ10 – This helps to decrease oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. It also reduces the negative health effects of aerobic training and abolishes free radicals that cause cell damage and premature aging.

Consider also:

Calcium, to boost bone density, but ideally you want to get adequate amounts through calcium-rich foods such as dairy and dark leafy greens and selenium to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease and to improve fertility.

Get tested!

In your 40’s, hormones start to deplete themselves as do other vital elements in the body so it’s worth getting a thorough blood test to highlight any deficiencies. Check your insurance as many providers will even cover the test. Potential deficiencies worth focusing on include HCL (Hydrocloric Acid), Vitamin D3, Magnesium and Zinc. Top Tip

With today’s food quality, work schedules and environmental toxins, supplementation is an imperative for just about everyone.  Remember though that they’re called supplements for a reason and you still need to aim for a healthy balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, thin-skinned fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats. Remember too that more is not better – avoid “mega-doses.” You only need 100% daily value, not 500%.
